Nikki completed her masters on the first phase of our kelp restoration work and she will share some of the data from the monitoring program at Jawbone.
Bio
Nicola Masters is a graduate researcher at the University of Melbourne, School of BioSciences. She recently finished her Masters degree after completing a two-year research project studying seaweed restoration in Port Phillip Bay. Nicola led a monitoring program at Jawbone and Ricketts Point marine sanctuaries and investigated the transition of urchin barrens into restored kelp habitats, and is continuing this monitoring to understand whether these restored habitats support fish and invertebrates as seen in healthy seaweed reefs.
Nicola loves all-things-ocean and will never pass up an opportunity to get into the water- particularly if diving is involved. Her research took place entirely via SCUBA, providing a valuable opportunity to immerse in the local marine environment and connect with its animal inhabitants. She is passionate about understanding how our actions impact marine communities, emphasising the importance of proper monitoring to assess whether we have achieved meaningful environmental outcomes.
